GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) 0:00 (music) 0:04 (music) 0:08 (music) 0:12 When the next generation of NOAA geostationary satellites, GOES-R, 0:16 launches in 2016, it will deliver highly advanced data 0:20 and will continue an important legacy of Earth observations. 0:24 The primary sensor on the GOES-R 0:28 series is the Advanced Baseline Imager or the ABI. 0:32 This instrument will image Earth's weather, climate 0:36 and environment and will improve every product from the current GOES imager. 0:40 With as many as 0:44 16 spectral bands, the ABI instrument will deliver a greater number of 0:48 products with 5 times faster coverage rate and 4 times better 0:52 spatial resolution than the current GOES imagers. 0:56 FASTER, means improving real-time forecasting capabilities. 1:00 With ABI on board, GOES-R will deliver rapid scan images 1:04 EVERY SINGLE MINUTE, allowing forecasters to get a much quicker update 1:08 on developing atmospheric events. 1:12 ABI will be able to produce a full scan of the Earth in 5 minutes, 1:16 which is another significant improvement over the current 30-minute scan. 1:20 BETTER SPATIAL RESOLUTION 1:24 means that ABI will deliver spectacular 3 dimensional visuals 1:28 along with enhanced detection of the early stages of severe weather events. 1:32 (music) 1:36 ABI's data will help meteorologists zoom in and track an area of 1:40 developing storms in much greater detail. 1:44 Knowing how rapidly storm clouds are forming will mean earlier warnings for 1:48 people on the ground. ABI will track and monitor cloud formation, 1:52 atmospheric motion, convection, land surface temperature, 1:56 ocean dynamics, flow of water, fire, 2:01 smoke, volcanic ash plume, aerosols and air quality, 2:05 as well as vegetation health. Better data quality 2:09 and faster scan speed will contribute to fewer weather related flight delays 2:13 and incidents with volcanic ash plumes, as well as earlier preparation 2:17 for tropical storms and hurricanes. 2:21 By delivering a better and larger suite of weather, climate, 2:25 and environmental products, ABI is poised to become a true 2:29 success story, benefitting the public by enhancing the Nation's weather 2:33 prediction capabilities. 2:37 (music) 2:41 (music) 2:45 (beeping) 2:49 (beeping) 2:53
